Fishing in Hartenbos
Hartenbos offers kilometres of easily accessible surf beach just north of Mossel Bay, making it a favourite for holiday anglers and serious kob hunters alike. The gentle-sloping beaches produce kob on lures and bait after dark, strong shad runs in autumn, and consistent daytime sport on blacktail, stumpnose and steenbras. Beach access points along the dunes mean you can spread out and find your own water even in season.
The Hartenbos River mouth, when open to the sea, becomes a hotspot for spotted grunter and the odd garrick, and the deeper channel holds kob on spring tides.
Best seasons: kob October to April, shad March to June, grunter in the estuary through summer. Hartenbos is also home to tackle shops and bait suppliers, and its flat, safe beaches are ideal for introducing kids to fishing.
