Fishing in Groot Brak River
Groot Brak River is a relaxed village built around a beautiful estuary that consistently produces spotted grunter, garrick and white steenbras. The tidal lagoon is ideal for light-tackle and fly anglers — sight-casting to grunter tailing on the sandbanks is a local speciality. When the mouth is open, garrick patrol the channel on the incoming tide and big kob move in after dark.
The beaches either side of the mouth, from Glentana to Tergniet, are quieter than the main Mossel Bay strands and fish well for kob, blacktail and steenbras. Rocky outcrops at Glentana produce galjoen in winter.
Best seasons: grunter September to April, garrick November to March, kob year-round with summer peaks. The estuary is sensitive to mouth conditions — fishing changes completely depending on whether it's open or closed, so ask locally before planning your session.
