The poenskop or black musselcracker — the brute of the rocks. A blunt-headed seabream with crushing jaws that grows past 30 kg and lives over 40 years.
Where & how: deep ledges with broken water: Robberg, the Heads, Tsitsikamma, Fransmanshoek. Big baits — whole redbait, crab, chokka heads, octopus leg — on 8/0+ hooks, heavy mono and serious drag. The first run of a big cracker is unstoppable; you either turn it before the reef or you don't.
Conservation: extremely slow-growing and resident — a released cracker is still there next season; a kept one took decades to grow. Limit 1 per day, 50 cm minimum. Most specialists now release everything.

Robust dark grey-black body; old fish develop a bulbous forehead; powerful jaws.

Dogged, side-on power using the wash and structure — hold on and don't give line into the reef.

How to catch Musselcracker
Heavy rock outfit, 15-24 kg mono, 8/0+ hooks
6000–8000 fixed-spool surf reel (or a coffee-grinder/scarborough) with 250 m+ of line.
0.35–0.45 mm mono or 20–30 lb braid.
1/0–4/0 depending on target and bait size.
0.50–0.70 mm mono trace, abrasion-resistant for the rocks.

When to catch Musselcracker
Calm autumn seas, deep ledges, daytime
Two hours either side of high tide fills the gutters; spring tides move the most water.
Dark moon and calm spring tides
Galjoen and bream prefer cooler 14–18 °C; kob feed across the range, best in low light.
🥅 Landing
Time the swash to slide the fish up the beach or into a gulley; don't try to winch it over dry rock.
♻️ Release
Wet hands, support the fish horizontally, minimise air time and let it swim off under its own power.
