Fishing in George

George is the gateway to two of the coast's most storied rock and surf venues: Herolds Bay and Victoria Bay. Vic Bay's deep-water point is famous for garrick and kob — fish move within casting range of the rocks, and the protected corner lets you fish in most conditions. Herolds Bay offers steep beaches and gulleys that produce kob, shad and blacktail, with galjoen in the winter washes.

The Gwaing and Kaaimans river mouths add estuary variety, and the Outeniqua foothills hide fly-fishing dams and streams for those wanting a freshwater day. George itself has tackle shops, reel servicing and easy access to the whole stretch from Mossel Bay to Wilderness.

Best seasons: garrick November to April at Vic Bay point; kob after dark year-round; galjoen June to September. Watch swell forecasts — these venues fish best on a dropping sea.
