Fishing in Gouritsmond
Gouritsmond is a tiny village with an outsized reputation, built around the mouth of the mighty Gouritz River — one of the most consistent kob and garrick venues on the entire southern Cape coast. The deep channel at the mouth funnels baitfish between sea and river, and big leervis hunt here through summer, while heavy kob are taken on live bait and lures after dark.
The rocky points flanking the mouth fish well for galjoen, blacktail and bronze bream in winter, and the beaches toward Vleesbaai produce steenbras on light tackle. Upriver, the Gouritz offers quiet estuary fishing for grunter and springer.
Best seasons: garrick from November to April, kob year-round with a summer peak, galjoen mid-winter. Local knowledge counts here — water colour after rains determines everything, so check conditions before the drive.
