Fishing in Knysna

Knysna's famous lagoon is the beating heart of its fishing. The vast tidal estuary holds excellent spotted grunter, white steenbras, garrick and springer, with sight-fishing on the flats and drift-baiting in the channels both productive. The Heads — the dramatic cliffs guarding the entrance — funnel huge tidal flows, and the deep channels between them hold big kob, musselcracker and garrick for anglers fishing from boats or the eastern rocks.

Outside, the coast toward Buffalo Bay and Noetzie offers surf and rock fishing for kob, blacktail and galjoen. Knysna township has full services: tackle shops, boat hire, guides and charters.

Best seasons: grunter September to May; garrick summer months; kob in the Heads channels year-round. Note the lagoon is a protected area with specific bag and size limits and closed zones — check current SANParks regulations before fishing.
