Fishing in Mossel Bay

Mossel Bay is the deep sea capital of the Garden Route. Charter boats run from the harbour to the famous reefs off Cape St Blaize and out to the tuna grounds, returning with red roman, katonkel, yellowtail, dorado and — in season — longfin and yellowfin tuna. The bay's sheltered waters make it one of the most reliable launch sites on the coast.

Shore anglers are spoiled: The Point is legendary for shad and garrick, the harbour wall offers safe family fishing, and the beaches from Santos to Hartenbos produce kob and steenbras. Rock ledges toward Pinnacle Point hold galjoen and musselcracker in winter.

Best seasons: tuna and dorado December to April; shad runs peak in autumn; kob fishing is strong year-round. With tackle shops, bait suppliers and charters all in town, Mossel Bay is the easiest place on the coast to organise a fishing trip.
