Fishing in Plettenberg Bay
Plettenberg Bay packs remarkable variety into one sweep of coast. The Robberg Peninsula is the marquee venue — deep ledges dropping into blue water where musselcracker, kob, garrick and seasonal yellowtail come within reach of rock anglers. The long beaches of the bay itself (Robberg Beach, Lookout, Keurbooms) fish well for kob, shad and steenbras.
The Keurbooms/Bitou estuary is a superb light-tackle fishery for spotted grunter, garrick and steenbras, best worked from a small boat or kayak. Offshore, charters target reef fish and gamefish, with the bay's resident bait balls drawing yellowtail and katonkel in summer.
Best seasons: yellowtail December to April off Robberg; kob and garrick October to April; grunter most of the year in the estuary. Robberg is a nature reserve — permits required, and the scramble to the ledges demands fitness and care.
