Keurbooms River Mouth

Estuary fishing spot

Keurbooms River Mouth
📍 -34.0300, 23.3900🧭 Best winds: Calm early mornings; light sea breeze afternoons okay in sheltered water🌊 Best tide: Pushing tide over the banks; last of the ebb in the channels🚗 Parking at public slipway or municipal access points

The Keurbooms/Bitou estuary east of Plettenberg Bay is a superb light-tackle and fly fishery. Spotted grunter feed on the extensive prawn banks (sight-fishing at low tide is exceptional), white steenbras cruise the sand edges, and garrick hunt mullet in the main channel through summer. After dark, kob move into the deeper holes near the mouth.

A kayak or small boat transforms the venue, opening the upper reaches where the fish see less pressure. Bank fishing is productive around the public access points and the mouth area.

Live prawn, sand prawn and small mullet are the baits that matter; fly anglers score with prawn and baitfish patterns. The Keurbooms is a protected estuary with bag and size limits — and parts fall under reserve rules — so check current regulations.

⚠️ Safety: Soft mud in places; rising tides cut off banks — plan your exit
