Fishing in Wilderness

Fishing in Wilderness

Wilderness offers some of the finest kob water on the coast: kilometres of steep, deep surf beach where the fish feed within a rod-length of the shore break. First light and last light are prime, with lures and live bait both accounting for heavy fish. The beach also produces strong shad runs, steenbras and blacktail.

Behind the beach, the Touw River estuary and the lakes (Island Lake, Langvlei, Rondevlei) offer sheltered light-tackle fishing for grunter, springer and mullet, with lovely fly water when the wind blows the sea out.

Best seasons: kob October to April with the best fish in mid-summer; shad in autumn; estuary fishing year-round. The steep beach means strong side-wash — fish with heavier grapnel sinkers, and treat the surf with respect. Access points along the N2 make it easy to find unpressured water.
