Fishing in Sedgefield
Sedgefield sits between lakes and sea, and its crown jewel is Gericke's Point — a sandstone outcrop reaching into deep water that produces galjoen, blacktail, zebra and kob, with musselcracker for heavy-tackle specialists. It's one of the most photogenic and productive rock venues on the coast, accessible at low tide along the beach.
The Swartvlei estuary is equally important: South Africa's largest natural inland lake system drains here, and the mouth area fires for spotted grunter, garrick and steenbras when open. The beaches toward Platbank produce kob at night.
Best seasons: galjoen June to September at Gericke's; grunter and garrick in the estuary from October to April. Check tides carefully — Gericke's Point cuts off on the pushing tide, and the estuary fishes completely differently open versus closed. Permits from the post office.
