Robberg Peninsula at Plettenberg Bay is a marine reserve peninsula offering the most dramatic rock fishing on the Garden Route. Deep ledges on the seaward side drop straight into blue water: musselcracker, big kob, garrick and — in summer — yellowtail all come within casting range. Spinning with heavy spoons at dawn accounts for the 'tail and garrick; heavy bait tackle does the work for cracker and kob.
Access is on foot along the reserve trails — a serious walk with tackle, so travel light and take water. Only parts of the peninsula are open to angling under the reserve rules and a permit is required: check the current zonation before you go.
The exposed ledges take swell — never fish alone here, watch the sea constantly, and be willing to walk away when it's big.
