The Swartkops estuary in Gqeberha is one of the country's most productive grunter systems, minutes from the city. Its wide tidal flats and prawn banks hold large spotted grunter year-round, with the best sight-fishing on spring low tides. Kob patrol the deeper channels (winter often produces the better fish), while springer, garrick and steenbras add variety.
Bank access is good along Redhouse, Amsterdamhoek and the flats, and small boats launch easily to work the full system. Live mud prawn is king here — pump it on the low (permit and limits apply).
The estuary is an urban system, so fish it on the incoming tide for the cleanest water. It's also a superb fly-fishing venue, with grunter tailing in centimetres of water on calm mornings.
