The Gamtoos River mouth, west of Gqeberha, is a renowned kob and grunter venue where a big, slow river meets a long surf beach. The estuary holds excellent spotted grunter and springer along its prawn banks and channels — a boat or kayak helps cover the long tidal reaches. At the mouth, kob feed in the channel and the adjacent surf after dark, with garrick showing in summer.
The beach either side of the mouth fishes well for kob and steenbras in the deeper gutters.
Like all river mouths, water colour rules: after heavy inland rain the system pushes brown water and fishing slows until it cleans. The area is remote compared to town venues — take supplies, fuel up beforehand, and ideally fish it with someone who knows the access roads.
