Kromme River Estuary

The Kromme River estuary at St Francis Bay is one of South Africa's blue-ribbon grunter fisheries. Its long tidal reaches and healthy prawn banks produce spotted grunter of trophy size — stalk them on the flats at low tide or drift baits along the channel drop-offs. Garrick run the main channel in summer, kob hold in the deeper bends, and white steenbras work the sand edges.

The marina canals connected to the system fish surprisingly well for grunter and springer, especially early morning. A boat or kayak is a big advantage on this long system, but bank access exists at several points.

The Kromme is prawn-rich: pumping your own bait at low tide is part of the ritual (permit required, limits apply). Wind-sheltered options make this a great bet when the westerlies blow.

⚠️ Safety: Soft mud in places; rising tides cut off banks — plan your exit
