Zebra

Illustration: gardenroutefishing.co.za

Unmistakable in its convict stripes, the zebra (wildeperd) is a wary, powerful seabream of clean-water gulleys and ledges.

Where & how: rocky points with moderate white water — Vic Bay, Robberg, the Tsitsikamma edges. Fish small baits (redbait, prawn, wonderworm) on light traces with minimal hardware; zebra inspect everything. Calm, clear days after a blow fish best.

Tackle: light rock outfits, 6-10 kg, small sharp hooks.

Limits: 30 cm minimum, 5 per day. Resident and slow-growing — the big striped units in a gulley took many years to get there.

When to catch Zebra

📅 Best months

Clear calm days after a blow

🌊 Best tides

Two hours either side of high tide fills the gutters; spring tides move the most water.

🌡️ Water temperature

Galjoen and bream prefer cooler 14–18 °C; kob feed across the range, best in low light.

🥅 Landing

Time the swash to slide the fish up the beach or into a gulley; don't try to winch it over dry rock.

♻️ Release

Wet hands, support the fish horizontally, minimise air time and let it swim off under its own power.

📏 Limits & restrictions
