Reef & deep sea

Dageraad

Illustration: gardenroutefishing.co.za

A beautiful rose-and-silver seabream of the mid-depth reefs, named for the dawn colours along its flanks. Another slow-growing Cape endemic that deserves careful handling.

Where & how: reef in 30-80 m off Stilbaai, Mossel Bay and Algoa Bay. Standard bottom traces with squid and sardine; often mixed in with roman and red stumpnose catches.

Conservation: overfished historically; limit 1 per day, 40 cm minimum. Release fish in good condition with a descending device — dageraad suffer badly from barotrauma.

Field guide

💪 Fighting ability

Bores hard for the reef the moment it's hooked — turn its head early or you'll be cut off.

How to catch Dageraad

🎣 Rod / tackle

Medium boat outfit, bottom trace

🎡 Reels

Conventional boat reel (4/0–6/0) for deeper marks, or a 6000–10000 spinning reel for lighter inshore reef.

🧵 Line / braid

0.40 mm mono or 30–50 lb braid.

#️⃣ Hooks

3/0–6/0 octopus/beak hooks on a two-hook bottom trace.

🪢 Leader / trace

0.60–0.80 mm fluorocarbon or mono trace.

🪱 Baits & lures

Squid, sardine

When to catch Dageraad

📅 Best months

Daytime, 30-80 m reef

🌊 Best tides

Slack tide over the reef makes bait presentation easiest; the fish often feed best on the tide change.

🌡️ Water temperature

Feeds across a range; roughly 15–20 °C inshore, holding deeper as water warms.

🥅 Landing

Boat: use a gaff or net for the pot, lift smaller fish by the trace. Watch spines and teeth.

♻️ Release

Use a descending device to recompress fish brought up from depth (barotrauma) and give them the best chance of survival.

📏 Limits & restrictions

⚠️ 40 cm min, only 1/day — use descending device on release
