🪨 Reef Fishing Basics

Reef fish — roman, musselcracker, bream, galjoen, red stumpnose — live over rocky ground and reward anglers who fish structure with the right tackle.

Finding reef: from the shore, look for rocky points, gulleys and washes; from a boat, use a sounder to find pinnacles, ledges and drop-offs. Fish hold on the edges and in the broken ground, not over clean sand.

Tackle: reef fish dive hard for cover, so you fish heavier than for sand species. Off the rocks, a medium-heavy rod, 8–15 kg line and a short strong trace. On a boat, a two-hook bottom rig on 0.60–0.80 mm trace. Turn the fish's head early or it reefs you and cuts off.

Baits: redbait, mussel, crab and chokka are the naturals. Match the bait to the ground — the reef fish are eating what lives on that reef.

Conservation: many reef species are slow-growing, endemic and heavily depleted (roman, cracker, red steenbras). Know the size and bag limits, use a descending device to release deep-caught fish, and consider releasing the big old breeders that took decades to grow.
