🎣 How to Catch Kob (Kabeljou)

Kob (kabeljou, dusky kob) are the number-one target for most Garden Route surf and estuary anglers — powerful, great eating, and reachable from the beach. They feed almost entirely in low light, so your best windows are the first two hours of light, the last light of day, and after dark.

Where to find them: deep surf gutters on steep beaches (Wilderness, Plett), the channels of estuaries (Knysna, Swartvlei), and around river mouths (Gouritz, Groot Brak). Read the beach at low tide to find the deeper holes, then fish them on the pushing tide.

Tackle and bait: a 12–14 ft surf rod, 6000–8000 reel and 0.35–0.45 mm line. Fish fresh sardine, chokka, live or dead mullet and white mussel on a 4/0–6/0 hook. Artificial anglers do very well on 4–6 inch paddletails worked slowly along the bottom.

Conservation matters: kob stocks are severely depleted. The daily limit is 1 fish at 60 cm minimum, and releasing the big breeding females keeps the fishery alive. Handle released fish gently and support them until they swim off.
