๐ณ๏ธ Fishing Gutters
A gutter is a deeper trough running between the shore and a sandbank, or between banks. Gutters are the single most reliable structure to target on a surf beach.
Why they hold fish: the gutter is a highway of deeper, calmer water where predators cruise and bait shelters. Waves wash food into the gutter over the banks, and fish patrol it looking for an easy meal.
Finding them: at low tide a gutter shows as a darker band of water where the waves don't break, often close to the shore. Some gutters are just beyond the first line of breakers; others run right at your feet. Walk the beach and mark the deep gutters against a dune landmark.
Fishing them: you often don't need a long cast โ many fish feed in the close gutter within 20โ40 m. Drop your bait into the trough and hold it there with a grapnel sinker. Fish the gutter on the pushing tide and in low light for the best results.
A close gutter at dawn with fresh bait is one of the highest-percentage situations in surf fishing โ don't cast over the fish to reach the horizon.
