The bronze whaler (copper shark) is the classic big-shark target off Cape beaches. A good trace lands the fish quickly so it can be released healthy — a long fight exhausts the shark and risks your safety.

Mainline and leader: 0.50–0.70 mm mono or 50–80 lb braid to a rubbing leader of 1.5–2 m of 100–200 lb mono. Bronze whalers don't have cutting teeth like a shad, but their rough skin and thrashing will part light line, so the heavy rubbing leader is essential.

The bite trace: 30–60 cm of 49-strand coated cable or heavy single-strand wire crimped to an 8/0–12/0 non-stainless circle hook. Non-stainless matters — if you have to cut a deep-hooked fish free, the hook rusts out.

Rig it as a running trace with a strong swivel and a slide for the sinker so the fish feels little resistance. Use a bait clip to protect soft baits (shad head, mackerel flapper) on the cast. Fish heavy enough tackle to beach the fish in minutes, keep it in the wash, remove the hook or cut the leader close, and revive it fully. No sale of any recreationally caught shark.
